History:
Biscuits and gravy, a beloved Southern breakfast staple, originated as a hearty dish for farm laborers in the American South during the 19th century, combining leftover biscuits with rich, savory gravy made from pan drippings and milk. Today, it's cherished for its comforting simplicity and indulgent flavors, making it a popular choice for breakfast or brunch across the United States.

Ingredients:

  • 8 biscuits (homemade or store-bought)

  • 1/2 pound breakfast sausage

  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups milk

  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the biscuits according to your preferred recipe or package instructions.

  2. In a skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage, breaking it apart with a spatula, until it's browned and cooked through.

  3. Sprinkle the cooked sausage with flour and stir until it's evenly coated. Cook for an additional minute to cook off the raw flour taste.

  4. Gradually pour in the milk while stirring continuously to prevent lumps from forming. Cook the gravy, stirring frequently, until it thickens to your desired consistency.

  5. Season the gravy with salt and pepper to taste.

  6. Split the biscuits in half and place them on serving plates. Spoon the hot sausage gravy over the biscuits.

  7. Serve immediately and enjoy the comforting flavors of this classic Southern dish!
