Wisconsin is renowned for its cheese, and this casserole highlights the state's dairy heritage by showcasing sharp cheddar in a classic comfort food dish loved by all ages.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups fresh broccoli florets

  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

  • 1/2 cup milk

  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • Breadcrumbs for topping (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a small baking dish or two individual baking dishes.

  2. Steam or blanch the broccoli florets until they are just tender, about 5-7 minutes. Drain and set aside.

  3. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the flour and whisk continuously for 1-2 minutes to make a roux.

  4. Gradually pour in the milk, whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Cook until the sauce thickens, about 2-3 minutes.

  5. Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese until smooth and melted. Season with garlic powder, salt, and pepper to taste.

  6. Add the steamed broccoli to the cheese sauce, stirring gently to combine.

  7. Transfer the broccoli and cheese mixture to the prepared baking dish(es). If desired, sprinkle breadcrumbs over the top for a crispy crust.

  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbly and the top is golden brown.

  9. Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving.
