Culinary Insights: Chicken Paprikash is a Hungarian comfort food, combining bold paprika and creamy sauce for a flavorful, timeless dish perfect for cozy dinners and family gatherings.

Ingredients:

  • 2 boneless chicken breasts or thighs

  • 1 onion, chopped

  • 1 tablespoon paprika (Hungarian if possible)

  • 1-2 tomatoes, chopped

  • 1 bell pepper, diced

  • 2 cups water or chicken broth (enough to cover the chicken)

  • 3 tablespoons flour

  • 4 tablespoons sour cream

  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Sauté the onion:
In a large pot, heat some oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until it’s soft and translucent.

  2. Add paprika:
Sprinkle in the paprika and stir for about 30 seconds to release the flavors.

  3. Add tomatoes and peppers:
Add the chopped tomatoes and diced bell pepper to the pot, stirring everything together.

  4. Cook the chicken:
Place the chicken pieces into the pot. Pour in enough water or chicken broth to cover the chicken. Add salt and pepper to taste. Bring to a simmer and cook until the chicken is tender (about 30-40 minutes).

  5. Thicken the sauce:
In a small bowl, combine 3 tablespoons of flour and 4 tablespoons of sour cream. Mix well, then add a bit of the chicken sauce to the bowl to thin it out. Once mixed, pour the mixture into the pot with the chicken.

  6. Simmer again:
Stir the sauce and cook for another 3 minutes until it thickens.

  7. Serve:
Serve hot with dumplings, egg noodles, or rice.
